Words Starting With ’M’ – Money, monkey, mat

Pronouncing the word "THE”

This word can be pronounced in two ways as "thuh” and "thee”. But there are some rules to follow to choose the proper kind of pronunciation mentioned below.

"thee” is used for strong pronunciation which rhymes with see, bee, tea

"thuh” is used for weak pronunciation as if in fa-ther, mo- ther, bro- ther 

"Thee” pronunciation is used for words beginning with vowels or that sound like vowel.

Words beginning with a vowel:

For example "the elephant”, "the umbrella”,” the apple”

Words beginning consonant which sound like a vowel:

For example "the hour”, "the umbrella”,” the apple”

Even when we want to stress the word we use "thuh”, though it starts with a vowel or consonant.

"I had dinner with Yuvraj the other day."

"Not the Yuvraj! The one who played in Indian Cricket Team?"

"No, the one who paints at the gallery."  

"Thuh” pronunciation is used for words beginning with consonants and those words beginning vowels which sound like a consonant.

Words beginning with a consonant:

For example "the sound”, "the shower”,” the word”

Words beginning vowels which sound like a consonant:

For example "the University”. Here U is pronounced with ‘You’ sound and is heard as if pronounced with Y.

Another example is "the One”. Here One in Pronounced with Wone and is heard as is pronounced with W.
